Programme Overview

This programme equips participants with the essential knowledge and practical awareness needed to recognise, prevent, and respond to common cyber threats.

The programme explores real-world risks such as business email compromise, phishing, ransomware, smishing, vishing, fake anti-virus alerts, and banking trojans, helping participants understand how these attacks are commonly executed.

Participants will also learn key defensive practices, including effective password management, two-factor authentication, encryption, and safe browser usage.

In addition, the programme covers broader areas of digital safety, including internet privacy, social media security, disinformation, identity theft, data protection considerations, securing Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and emerging AI-related threats. Each topic includes practical guidance and warning signs to help participants stay vigilant.

By the end of the programme, participants will be better equipped to identify cyber threats, apply preventive measures, and build a strong foundation in cybersecurity awareness.

All digital users with a keen interest in protecting themselves from cyber criminals. This is a beginner course in Cybersecurity applicable for all professionals with or without a background in Cybersecurity.

Module 1: Introduction
This session shows how easy it is for cyber criminals to gain access to your digital devices.

Module 2: Social engineering 
Real world case studies showing social engineering methods used by cyber criminals. Email phishing, Smishing, Vishing, Business email compromise. Delves into various red flags for participants to take note 

Module 3: Ransomware
Examples and consequences of ransomware attacks. Preventive measures to be adopted to deal with these attacks.

Module 4: Crypto mining
How attackers hijack computing resources for crypto mining and how to identify compromised device.

Module 5: Black Hat Search engine optimisation
How cybercriminals manipulate search engine rankings to push malicious websites to top rank, especially around trending topics.

Module 6: Banking Trojan and Fake anti-virus
This module deals with how trojans are installed in devices, to steal financial credentials and how to detect, prevent and respond to such situations. Spoofed anti-virus alerts to steal credentials.

Module 7: Physical security
This module discusses about aspects of physical security to take measures to avoid tailgating, dumpster diving. How to secure your devices, high value systems. USB safety with examples. Secure disposal of storage media.

Module 8: Securing Operating system
The best practises for patch management. The importance of firewall. Staying up to date with driver updates.

Module 9: Securing Email communication
Looking at end to end encrypted email service. Do not use email for storage. Best practice for unusual email.

Module 10: Smartphone and Mobile Apps
Importance of installing the latest updates of the OS. Precautions while downloading apps from app stores. Looking at application designed to help secure your phone. 

Module 11: Password management
Rules for creating stronger passwords. Use of tiered approach for high-risk accounts. Use of password manager for low or medium risk accounts. Test how strong your password is.

Module 12: Two factor authentication
Process for setting up two factor authentication. Types of two factor authentication and which one to choose from.

Module 13: Browser security
Safe browser usage- http versus https. How to prevent the installation of malicious third-party cookies, fingerprinting and trackers. Solutions to secure the browser. Exploring useful browser plugins.

Module 14: Internet Data Privacy
Use of existing account details as default logins for other websites. How to protect your privacy in social media sites. Disinformation and fake news. Identity theft.

Module 15: Personal Data Protection Law
Scope and Jurisdiction, Data Subject rights and Regulatory oversight.

Module 16: Encryption
Encryption of hard drive, check websites for encryption status, emails, instant messaging. Getting to know everything about VPN. Changing your DNS connection to avoid ISP snooping.

Module 17: Data backups and Disaster recovery
The importance of backups. Why we backup three times. Understanding backup methods. 

Module 18: IoT
Breaches through IoT devices. Securing IoT devices.

Module 19: AI Threat Awareness
AI generated phishing and social engineering. Deepfake Voice and Video scams. Safe use of AI tools like chatgpt. Company AI usage policy basics.

Module 20: Conclusion
The additional ways of protecting yourself- behavioural aspects.
