Tech Centre Cyber Arena Network Defender Programme

Programme Overview

This programme equips participants with critical skills to defend their networks and operating environments across local networks, endpoints, cloud infrastructure, applications, OT, and mobile.  

Participants will acquire knowledge of effective log analysis, network traffic monitoring, basic investigation, and response as well as business continuity and disaster recovery. 

Additionally, participants will dive into threats, analysing the attack surface, and studying threat prediction and threat intelligence. The programme has 100+ hands-on labs. 

The programme covers all the five functions of the NIST Framework – Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond and Recover. Aligns with ISO /IEC 17024 standards. The core modules of this programme are mapped to the U.S. Department of Defence Directive 8570/ 8140, NICE framework, UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) framework.

Learning Modules

Module 1: Network attacks and defence strategies 

This module covers mechanism of various attack techniques and hacking methodologies that attackers use to breach the security of an organisation’s networks. 

It also introduces defence strategies that network defenders should adopt to ensure comprehensive network security. 

  • Hands- on Lab: Modus operandi of different attacks at network, application, and host levels 

Module 2: Administrative Network security 

This module covers administrative security measures including compliance efforts, creating, and enforcing security policies, security awareness training, asset management.  

  • Hands-on Lab: Implementation of security policy, asset management, employee monitoring.

Module 3: Technical Network security 

Demonstrates concept of access control, identity and access management (IAM), cryptographic security techniques, various network security devices, and protocols. 

  • Hands-on Lab: Implementing access controls, VPN. 

Module 4: Network perimeter security 

Security configuration of perimeter security devices such as firewalls, intrusion detection and protection systems (IDS/IPS), routers, switches. 

  • Hands-on Lab: Configure and implement firewalls and IDS/IPS with the help of tools pfSense, Smoothwall, Windows Firewall, iptables, Suricata, Wazuh, ModSecurity 

Module 5: Endpoint security -Windows, Linux, Mobile and IoT  

This module covers security features and secure configuration techniques used to secure Windows, Linux, Mobile and IoT devices. 

  • Hands-on Lab: Windows patch management, Windows file integrity, Windows endpoint protection, Windows configuration baseline, active directory security, security troubleshooting, permissions 
  • Hands-on Lab: Linux system hardening, system security auditing, file integrity monitoring, permissions, access control. 
  • Hands-on Lab: Mobile device management 
  • Hands-on Lab: Secure IoT device communication 

Module 6: Application security 

This module covers various application security measures implemented to monitor, patch and upgrade installed applications constantly. 

  • Hands-on Lab: Application whitelisting, application sandboxing, WAF. 

Module 7: Data security 

This module covers various security measures implemented to secure organisation data. 

  • Hands-on Lab: Data encryption at rest and in transit, database encryption, email encryption, data backup and recovery, disc encryption.

Module 8: Enterprise Virtual Network security 

This module covers virtualisation concepts and technologies such as network virtualisation, software defined network, network function virtualisation, OS virtualisation security, container security, docker security and Kubernetes security. 

  • Hands-on Lab: Docker security audit, SDN communication security, Kubernetes security. 

Module 9: Enterprise Cloud security 

This module covers Cloud computing, shared responsibility model, AWS, Azure, GCP security. 

  • Hands-on Lab: AWS IAM, AWS KMS, AWS Storage, Azure MFA, GCP IAM, Azure resource locking, GCP Cloud IAP. 

Module 10: Enterprise Wireless Network security 

This module covers wireless standards, wireless topologies, wireless network components, wireless network encryption, wireless network authentication, WIFI security tools. 

  • Hands-on Lab: Wireless router security 

Module 11: Network traffic monitoring and analysis 

This module covers baseline traffic signatures, suspicious network traffic signatures, threat detection with Wireshark, bandwidth monitoring, network anomaly detection, and behaviour analysis. 

  • Hands-on Lab: Packet capturing, traffic monitoring, traffic analysis, threat detection, and bandwidth monitoring with tools such as Wireshark, topdump, PRTG, Capsa, NTOP. 

Module 12: Network log monitoring and analysis 

This module covers log analysis of Windows, Linux, Mac, firewall, router, web server, and centralised log analysis. 

  • Hands-on Lab: Configuring, viewing, and analysing logs in a local as well as centralised location. 

Module 13: Incident response and forensics investigation 

This module covers first responder, incident handling process, SOAR, EDR, XDR and forensics investigation. 

  • Hands-on Lab: Incident ticketing, reporting and escalations with OSSIM. 

Module 14: Business Continuity and Disaster recovery 

This module covers Business Continuity, Disaster recovery, Business impact analysis (BIA), Recovery time objective (RTO), Recovery point objective (RPO), Business continuity plan (BCP), Disaster recovery plan (DRP). 

  • Hands-on Lab: Implementing business continuity and disaster recovery scenarios with NLB. 

Module 15: Risk Anticipation with Risk Management 

This module covers various phases in implementing and executing an organisation’s risk management programme. 

  • Hands-on Lab: Network security audit, vulnerability management, application vulnerability scanning and analysis. 

Module 16: Threat Assessment with Attack Surface Analysis 

This module covers analysis of various attack surfaces including network, physical, software, human. Indicators of Exposures (IoE), attack simulation, attack surface reduction, attack surface monitoring tools, cloud, and IoT attack surface analysis. 

  • Hands-on Lab: System attack surface analysis, application attack surface analysis, attack surface mapping. 

Module 17: Threat Prediction with Cyber Threat Intelligence 

This module covers threat intelligence, indicators of compromise (IOC), indicators of attacks (IOA), threat intelligence layers, threat intelligence sources, threat intelligence feeds, threat intelligence platforms (TIP), and threat hunting. 

Hands-on Lab: Integrating OTX threat feeds, threat hunting.
